Answer Engine

Definition

An answer engine is a system that responds to a query with a direct, synthesized answer instead of a list of links. It retrieves information from sources, reads and combines it, and returns composed prose — often with inline citations. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini, and Copilot are answer engines.

Why it matters for AEO

Answer engines change the goal of optimization from ranking a page to being the source quoted inside the answer. Because the engine reads and synthesizes on the user's behalf, content must be easy to retrieve, trust, and excerpt to be cited. This is the surface AEO is built to win.
